Collins, a former World Championship gold medallist, dismissed American Michael Rodgers for his victory as he continues to build up for the Beijing Olympics this summer. Showing signs of recapturing his best form in recent years, Collins won silver in the 60 metres at the World Indoor Championship in Valencia in March and he won here with authority over Rodgers, who clocked 10.24 for the runner-up spot. Beijing appears to represent the last chance for Collins to win an Olympic medal. At the Sydney Games in 2000, Collins became the first ever Olympic finalist from his country and after winning gold at the 2003 World Championship in Paris, he reached the Olympic final again in Athens in 2004 and placed sixth. There was another good Caribbean win Tuesday evening when Cuban Yargelis Savigne won the women's triple jump at a season's best 14.81 metres. Yargelis won ahead of Ukraine's Olha Saladuha (14.76m). |
